When you are a psychology student or an emerging practitioner in the field of Mental Health, stepping into the field, supervision and mentoring are not optional; they are foundational to becoming a competent and ethical therapist.
During my bachelor's in psychology honours, I still remember lying awake at night, asking myself questions that many students quietly carry:
What will I actually do in my first session?
What happens when someone sits in front of me and shares their deepest vulnerabilities?
What do I truly have to offer as a therapist?
It’s one thing to write the right answers in an exam and receive an A+. But real therapy is not an exam. It is a deeply human encounter built on trust, responsibility, and presence.
I often asked myself:
Who am I as a therapist?
Why would someone choose to come to me?
Why should they trust me with their story?
What are the skills that I need to develop to be a credible and ethical therapist?
Those questions became my wake-up call.
Academic learning gave me a strong foundation, but I quickly realised that becoming a therapist requires much more than degrees. It requires reflection, guidance, mentorship, and the space to grow into your professional identity.
At the same time, the world of professional development can feel overwhelming. There are countless workshops, trainings, and certifications available. For many students and early practitioners, the challenge becomes figuring out:
What is genuinely valuable?
What is authentic learning?
Who is credible and ethical?
And what is simply another certificate?
For me, the goal was never to collect endless certifications.
What mattered most was how those experiences were shaping me to become a credible & ethical therapist.
A good therapist is not defined by the number of certificates or degrees you hold. It is shaped by your self-awareness, your ability to reflect, and the quality of supervision and mentorship you receive, and a lot more.
If you are a psychology student or an emerging practitioner in the field of mental health, wondering how to grow, how to build confidence in your sessions, and how to develop your therapeutic identity, you are in the right place.
Start your journey with supervision that’s supportive, practical, and grounded in real-world experience.
